Yunnan’s Coffee Growing Industry

According to 2018 data from the US Department of Agriculture’s 2018, Yunnan Province produces more than 95% of China’s coffee. This has helped China become the 13th largest coffee producer in the world and the 9th largest Arabica coffee producer in the world.

During the 2017-18 harvest season, Yunnan produced 2.3 million bags (60 kg) of coffee beans from 120,000 ha (295,000 ac) with 1.14 million farmers.

By 2020, the planted coffee area in Yunnan is expected to exceed 166,500 ha (410,000 ac), with annual output growing to 200,000 tons of coffee green beans. That equates to a total output value of more than CNY 35 billion with a projected foreign exchange earning of more than USD 300 million.

Pu’er

Elevation: over 1200m (over 3900 feet)

As of 2017, the coffee cultivation area of ​​Pu’er had reached 52,500 ha (130,000 ac). The coffee bean output was 58,600 tons with a total value of CNY 2.5 billion. Pu’er produces more coffee than any other area of China and is leading the way in terms of developing speciality coffees for international and domestic consumption.

Lincan

Elevation: up to 1300m (4300 feet)
Average annual rainfall: 1500-1750mm (59 – 69 inches)

In 2016 Lincan 96 operating coffee nurseries with an area of ​​1570 mu cultivating 67.19 million coffee seedlings. The total planted area was 13,500 ha (33,500 ac), and 17,300 ha (43,000 ac) of coffee planting area.

By 2020 it is expected that the total coffee planting area will be stable at just over 40,000 ha (100,000 ac). The output of coffee beans should exceed 60,000 tons with a target value exceeding CNY 1 billion.

Baoshan

Elevation: 800-1400m (2,600 – 4600 feet)

Average annual sunlight: 2334.5 hours

In 2016 Baoshan had a planted coffee area of 17,300 ha (43,000 ac), with a total output of 35,000 tons and an output value of over 1 billion yuan. The growing area is the third largest in the province and the total coffee output is ranked second.

By 2020 the total area of ​​high-quality coffee plantations is planned to reach 20,000 ha (50,000 ac) with a total output of 50,000 tons per annum. Of this total, the target for speciality coffee is about 40% of the total output. The total value of the industry is projected to be CNY 2 billion per annum.

As of 2017, the planted coffee area of ​​Dehong Prefecture has grown to 18,000 ha (45,000 ac) producing 250,000 tons of fresh coffee cherries.
