Hainan is a pretty awesome place and going there for a barista competition makes it doubly so. A few days of exciting competition and exotic coffees from around the world. A chance to mix with the China coffee community is always a bonus.
China is really lucky to have a competition like this as it is probably the second most international in the world after the WBC. Many of the competitors were in the top few baristas in their respective countries. With such a wide range of cultural influences on display, the variety of signature drinks and levels of creativity were off the chart.
Matthew Lewin from Australia ended up going with the main prize after some incredible work with coffees frozen at ultra-low temperatures. Hopefully we’ll see more of him up here in China in the future.
